ADOPTION PROCESS: DOGS

1.) Sign yourself in (all party members must sign in) in the front lobby.

2.) Available dogs are able to be viewed in their kennels. Follow the hallways back to view available dogs. Please note that the dog areas can be loud.

For the health and safety of our dogs and human visitors, we ask that you follow these important rules when visiting our dog’s temporary homes at the shelter:

  • Do not open the door or kennel to the dog. If you would like to meet a dog, our staff will be happy to assist you.
  • Do not stick your fingers in the kennels or attempt to touch a dog. Fingers can easily be mistaken for delicious treats.
  • We believe in positive association, so please look out for treat buckets! You can pass our dogs treats by sliding them under the kennel bars on the floor. Do not hold the treat or attempt to give the treat through the bars with your fingers.
  • If a dog is barking, lunging, and jumping up on the door, this does not mean a dog is aggressive. Shelter dogs have a limited space that belongs to them and kennel reactivity is common. These dogs often behave completely differently outside the chaos of the shelter environment. Each of our dogs is assessed by our behavior, medical & animal care teams and has enrichment and exercise throughout the day to try and combat kennel reactivity. We ask that you be respectful of their space and do not bang on their doors or windows, or try and combat this behavior verbally.

3.) Interested in a dog? Speak with our adoption staff to ask questions, meet with dogs, and begin the adoption process.
You will be able to meet dogs in our play yards or in our available space inside. Please note that if there are several people waiting to meet with dogs, our team may have to limit how many dogs at a time they can show each party.

Your adoption will be processed with our Fred SPCA Matchmakers. During this time you will have an opportunity to speak with the adoption staff to ask any questions related to pet ownership and go over the history of the available animals you are interested in. Once you’ve decided to move forward with the adoption, you will pay all fees and sign the paperwork. Dogs must have a leash and collar to leave the facility. These items can be purchased in our Fred SPCA boutique.

4.) If you have other dogs in the home you will need to bring them for a meet and greet facilitated by our staff. Owned pets are not allowed to walk through the adoption floor, so be sure to have someone with you to watch your dog while you visit our adoptable dog areas. If you need to come back for a meet and greet with your dog, you can place an animal on hold after meeting them for a non-refundable hold fee of $25/day for up to two days.
