Summer is in full swing! That means barbecues, pool parties, backyard games, and red-white-and-blue everything. As we gear up for the star-spangled fun of Independence Day (July 4th), many of us are excited for fireworks lighting up the sky. But while we’re ooh-ing and aah-ing at the sparkle and sizzle, our pets might be having a very different experience. For animals, fireworks can be loud, confusing, and downright scary. Those booming sounds and flashing lights can trigger anxiety, panic, or attempts to escape. The good news? With a little planning, we can make the holiday safer, and much less stressful, for our pet pals.

Here are some easy ways to help keep pets calm, safe, and comfy during the festivities:

1. Keep pets indoors.

Even if your pet is usually calm outside, fireworks can spook them unexpectedly. Keep doors, windows, and pet doors securely closed to prevent accidental escapes.

2. Create a cozy hideaway.

Set up a quiet, comfy space with their bed, favorite toys, and familiar blankets. Playing calming music or white noise can help mask the noise outside.

3. Double-check their ID.

Make sure collars have up-to-date tags and microchip info is current. If your pet gets loose, this can be their ticket back home. Even painters tape with your phone number on their collar is better than nothing!

4. Skip the fireworks shows.

Even the most social pets can panic in large, noisy crowds with loud BOOMS. Let them sit this one out in the comfort of their own home. They don’t need to see the show.

5. Ask your vet about calming aids.

For pets who are especially anxious, calming chews, wraps, or temporary anti-anxiety medications may help. Your vet can guide you on safe options.

Each year, shelters across the country see a heartbreaking increase in lost pets around the Fourth of July. Let’s do our part to keep tails wagging and whiskers twitching in all the right ways. They count on us, and we know we can count on you.

Stay safe, have fun, and give your pets an extra cuddle for being the brave little champs they are!
