It’s National Boss Day, a day that allows us to take pause and celebrate our fearless leadership here at the Fredericksburg SPCA. This year, it is a bittersweet day for us as it is coming up on our last days with Caitlin Daly, our Executive Director who has served the community and its animals for nearly 5 years.
Cailtin has changed this community through her intense dedication to animal welfare and relentless upward and onward attitude that has kept us going through the difficult times that are inevitable in this line of work. The good times often came from her creative ideas, mixed with her work ethic and skills. She has lifted this organization to great heights in what feels like the blink of an eye. We have been able to accomplish so much with her support, and the Fredericksburg SPCA is what it is today because of Caitlin. She is leaving behind something she was instrumental in creating – an Animal Resource Center for our community that now has the tools to keep growing and serving the community’s animals and the people who love them.
Under her leadership we have made some much needed changes in Virginia. We shed breed labels, and introduce our dogs with an ‘Individual’s First’ approach, learning their personality and needs. We have created low barrier adoptions, so that we can save more lives by being fair to the needs of companion animals and the people who want to love them. When faced with “we CAN’T because WHAT IF”, Caitlin would challenge it with “but WHAT IF we CAN”, and sure enough, new programs were born into our community that connected the public with our mission. Animals were served tremendously in our care through implementing new programs like the Adventure Tails program where you can take a dog out for the day, something that was highly unheard of in our field of work, due to the what ifs. What ended up happening was an increase in mental and physical stimulation through outside enrichment – which lead to less kennel stress and more adoptions.
Caitlin built the values and mission we stand on, and has lead us not only to an increase in life saving numbers in companion animals – but has supported the fight in humane treatment of all animals. She was on the board for the Virginia Federation of Humane Societies and lobbied for animal rights alongside senate. She exemplified her great leadership by taking the organization to new heights on a thrifty budget, winning non-profit of the year through the Chamber of Commerce and earning countless grants to support our entrepreneurial programs.
We here at the Fredericksburg SPCA are going to miss Cailtin tremendously, and are so thankful for her dedication and compassionate leadership that continues to allow all of us to fall in love with what we do over and over again. Her kindness, compassion, resilience and dedication to this field shows in all that she does. We wish her the best as she continues her journey to Lollypop Farms, a sanctuary in upstate New York.
P.S. We are also going to immensely miss her fur children; Jenna, Rowan & Poe who would bless us with kisses, toots, cuteness and a never ending game of tennis.

Supporters and Friends,
As another year comes to a close, I am amazed by what we have accomplished together. Our safe placement rate is higher than ever before, with over 99.99% of the animals in our care finding happy and loving homes. Shelter length of stay has dropped significantly, all while having a higher number of animals in foster care. This means less time in the shelter overall, therefore less illness and stress. Win-Win!
Along with this wonderful news of a successful year, I would like to share my decision to move from the Fredericksburg SPCA to an organization in upstate New York. I have loved every moment of my time here and could never have imagined leaving, but fate has spoken and my time has come.
It has been such a beautiful past four and a half years and I will always hold fond memories in my heart of the organization and the community, not to mention all of the wonderful people.
There has never been a better time than now to renew your support for the Fredericksburg SPCA. Transitions can be difficult, however with your help we can make this life saving animal shelter stronger than ever. Please consider a gift today!
Thank you for helping us move forward towards a bigger and brighter future.
